5/23

Today was the last day of senior project and I am glad to say that I feel I got a lot accomplished and learned a lot. Today I worked on touching up blogs and making sure they look good to turn in. I also worked on my presentation and added photos and writing to where it needed to go. I wrapped up my action personal training work and made sure to look when I could go and take the official test to get certified.  Although I didn't officially get certified I will because I need to for my job this summer working at the YMCA. I look forward to getting back to campus a presenting the work and knowledge that I have gained over the past few weeks.  hours: 6

5/22

Today I woke up and logged on to do the last day of my online classes course. The final class talked about the physiology of personal training and what it takes to keep clients engaged and focused during their training. It also went over how to keep younger clients interested, and that was to make a game out of the training and adding in competitive stuff if they are in a group. Another way to keep the clients engaged is too have a workout buddy that can push you. Sometimes when you workout with someone else if makes you push harder in your workout. Today I also did my poster board for my final presentation and pretty much finished it just need to add some finishing touches. Tomorrow I will be heading back up to Proctor and will have all my stuff completed.  Hours: 6

Reflection 2

This week was a much better week, I fully knew how to do my project and what I needed to get done to be successful. The first week of working with the personal trainers was more shadowing and watching what they were doing. I consisted of taking more notes than actually getting to work with the clients. During this second week, I feel Luc the trainer I was working with gained trust in me to work with clients and really show the experience that I have with fitness. Classes this week were also different, the classes in the first week focused more on the real overview of what personal training is and not so much on how to be a personal trainer. This week's classes went over more on how to create programs for clients' specific needs and how to help a client achieve their goals. An interesting part I learned is that keeping the motivation for your client may be hard so you need to come up with ways to keep them motivated. This may be someone who is overweight or a younger client. . T

Today I got up and decided to take practice exam instead of classes, I learned what I will need to work on for the final exam and what sections I already have down. I also researched areas where I will have to go to take the final exam because I will need to do the final exam in person. The final exam is three hours long and is 250 questions. I took the lower body anatomy lesson today and it focused on exercises for the lower body and the best way to avoid injury because the lower body is so important. Talked about how important warming is and how there are different warm ups for different age clients. For example older clients should do more stationary joint warm ups while younger clients or athletes should more riding the bike or stretching warm ups. The last class of the online program was the psychology of personal training and how to keep yourself and your clients motivated. Some examples are having a workout buddy, family workout weekend, weight watchers and fitness classes. ho

Today I worked in person with Luc who is a personal trainer at the Exeter Hospital athletic training. Today I did more stuff with the clients, like demonstrating exercises and answering some basic questions they may have. Today there was more of a range of clients, in the morning there was a Division 1 soccer player and in the afternoon there were mid to older clients. The soccer player mainly focused on agility and strength training while the older clients focused on rehabilitation or balance. I noticed that no matter their age or experience in lifting, they all did some exercises with a band. I asked why and they told me using the band helps strengthen stabilizer muscles that don’t usually get worked. I also learned about fat grip which is an attachment you can put on a barbell or kettlebell and this also helps strengthen stabilizer muscles. The highlight of the day was working with the clients and sharing some experiences that I already have and have learned from the past few weeks.

senior day 8

Today's classes went over trends in exercise and personal training, it also went over the anatomy of upper body exercises. The major trends I learned today were common ones but there were some that I had never heard of before. The most popular trends in exercise are boot camps, small group training, weight loss challenges, mommy and me classes, and working with seniors and recovering cancer patients. The upper body exercise anatomy went over terms that are used when working the upper body. For example pectoral muscle, latissimus dorsi, and Bicep. It also went over different types of grips for example pronated is when the palm is facing down and supinated is when the palm is facing up. Tomorrow's classes with be focusing on lower body movements and the physiology of personal training. hours 6

Today I worked with Luc who is a personal trainer for the Exeter Hospital, I shadowed him working with groups and single sessions. Today he had me do more example of stuff with the clients so I was showing exercises and setting up stations for future use. I brought up to Luc that I wanted to open gyms when I am older and he has a lot of experience. He has opened three business in his lifetime and two of them were gyms. His other was a cycle shop which he still owns, and he was a professional biker for ten years. He gave me some really good advice, like try to start your company younger rather than older. He also said that trial and error in business is the best way to learn. He also said something funny which was, never name your company with your name. His example was never call your business like Simons gym. The highpoint was learning all the new stuff about business and that error helps create stronger business owners. Hours 5

senior project day 6

Today was the start of the senior project's second week and it started with resuming my classes. The classes today covered nutrition and how to eat certain foods to reach goals, whether building muscle or trying to lose weight. The second class focused on the business aspect and legal issues that may be faced in personal training. Today I also talked to my gym owner, a twenty-three-year-old kid who started his own gym. He told me about the business behind owning a gym and the prices it cost to keep it running. He opened his gym two years ago and he told me he spent well over $700,000 to open it. He plans to open more and it is something that I could see myself doing as well in the future. Getting experience working with the trainers and talking to a business owner will prepare greatly for when I start to come up with ideas for my future in the fitness industry. Hours:4.5

1st week reflection

This week was a very full week and had a lot of new experiences and learned a lot. I got through many classes and was able to take some practice tests which will help me understand what I will need to work on for when I take the final exam for my verification. The first week of classes mainly focused on anatomy and physiology and getting to understand the body. This involves learning terms used in the personal training field. Also understanding injuries and how to avoid them when working with clients. Next week is more about setting up a routine and getting the client to meet their goal and get better. Working with the personal trainers in Hampton was a really cool experience and I was able to learn a lot and see what it’s like to work directly with clients. I also saw how onboarding works when they get a new client and what they have to do to asses a client and create a program for their specific needs. The high point of the week was working with them and really getting to ask the qu

Today I was in person working with a personnel trainer who works with the Exeter Hospital but is in Hampton New Hampshire. Overall today was a really productive day, I was watching Him work with about five clients who all did their own workouts. It was interesting to see how many questions the trainer asked when giving a session and they always asked do if the client wants to do more. The morning session clients were older around sixty and seventy and they were doing more exercises to help strengthen their balance or help an already existing injury. For example one of the clients had a shoulder injury so most of his workout was rehab for that shoulder and working with bands and cables to strengthen it. They also went over an on boarding system with me, which was what they do when they get new clients and need to assess them. Instead of just telling me what they do they actually did the test with me and it was pretty cool to see where I fell on their screening. The screening consisted

Senior Project day 4

Today was a continuation of my classes and going over creating specific routines to meet people's goals and body types. The lessons also covered warning signs that a client may be injured or feel pain while performing their exercises. The lessons also covered more advanced techniques like interval training and supersets. These exercises are usually used by more advanced athletes or someone who has been training for years. I also completed a practice test today which is part of the course and it has helped me to understand lessons I will need to learn before taking my final exam. Tomorrow is the first day with working clients and seeing how in person sessions are run. Hours: 4

Senior project day 3

Today was the third day of the senior project and today I continued taking my online classes. Today I did three classes instead of my normal two, today the classes focused on creating programs for your clients and what you need to look for while creating their routines. I learned that client assessment is very important and when creating programs you may need to work with the client's doctor so the class also went over terms that may be used when communicating. Today also focused on injuries and how to avoid them when working with your client. It emphasized knowing your client's flexibility because this can have a major impact on injuries and with less flexibility there's a higher risk of injury. Friday I will be working in person with a personal trainer and I will be shadowing 1 on 1 client sessions and also sessions with sports teams, I will also be learning about how they create programs for their clients.  hours: 4 .5

Senior project day 2

Today was the second day of the senior project and I started taking my online classes with action personal training. The sessions I took today were Intro to exercise science and the Biomechanics of the Body. The exercise class was a review for me because I already took an anatomy class. The session talked about different exercises, what neurons do in the body and how muscle is actually built. The biomechanics talked about how trainers set up programs for clients and how they pick the right exercises to fit clients' needs.  It also reviewed the different positional names on the body. This was also something I have already gone over in my anatomy class.  Hours:4.5

Senior project day 1

Today was the senior project's first day, and I set up my account to get my personal training certificate. The program I will be using is called Action and they are a personal training course that a personal trainer friend of mine recommended. I plan to take online courses every day, there are fourteen each being around an hour and a half. I also met with my mentor Matt today, who is a certified trainer that works with the Exeter hospital. We met to talk over a plan and come up with some ideas that he felt would be beneficial for me to know. I plan on shadowing him during sessions, learning about on boarding with new clients, and the business aspect of personal training. The training course will take me longer than the two and half weeks I have but it will get completed. Hours completed 5.5
